Rob Alvey has a long association with New York, Long Island and especially the upscale Village of Garden City. He was raised and went to church in the Village, graduated from Garden City Garden City High School in 1969, married his high school sweetheart, and then helped his wife raise their 3 children in the Village. In 1992, his wife told him to get off the sofa and volunteer for the Village. Rob then served on the Garden City Environmental Advisory Board for 10 years and founded the Garden City Bird Sanctuary, where he devoted an additional 10 years and over 20,000 hours to develop and use a Nassau County stormwater basin for community and environmental benefit, including sponsoring over 3 dozen scouts for their Eagle and Gold Award projects.  Rob also donated his time to the Garden City Community Theatre where he enjoyed acting for over 15 years in their original musical comedies– mostly as an inept or corrupt businessman or politician.

Rob is also known for his unique creativity, his offbeat humor as a Mark Twain impersonator and for his love of frogs and his creative writing. He has published numerous articles on his efforts to be a responsible and good ‘Daddy’ to his daughters, when everything he plans always takes an unexpected and funny turn. His performances of Mark Twain have been well received and he has performed at the historic Friar’s Club and even on Broadway. Rob has donated his talents to numerous non-profit organizations. His goal is to keep the spirit of Mark Twain’s humor alive in the 21st century. His first comedy book, Catching Twainitis Syndrome, is about the adventures Rob has had being mistaken for Mark Twain during his travels. Rob also has several neighborhood fans who wait to see what new crazy snow sculpture he created with each snowstorm over the last 35 years. He thanks his wife, Suzie for getting him off the couch.

Rob was also a professional scientist with degrees in geology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has worked as a research scientist for Brooklyn Union Gas, completed a year- long assignment during 1982-83 in Saudi Arabia as consultant to the US Army Corps of Engineers, and spent over 2 decades as senior geologist with the USEPA Superfund Division in NYC. Rob served on an EPA task force created at the request Senator Chuck Schumer regarding the extensive Grumman-Navy groundwater contamination concerns in Bethpage. Rob served as co-chair for the EPA’s Groundwater Forum of hydrogeologic experts, and is currently a board member with the New York State Consulting Professional Geologists – which was instrumental in NYS passage of a Professional Geologist Licensing Act in 2016. Rob is also a tree enthusiast and is a member of the New York State Urban Forestry Council, and, in January 2018 was appointed to the Nassau County Tree Advisory Board. Rob retired in 2018 and currently lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he spends time writing his 3rd book regarding his swift descent into becoming a full-fledged ‘Floridiot’.
